I've seen hype cycles you people wouldn't believe. AI in the 1980s, natural language 4GLs, ecommerce, service buses, big data, and many more. I watched CTOs quiver with the latest FOMO. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time for disillusionment.

The BEAM is such a superpower

If we don't even have the basics right, if we don't even really understand what software development is or how to do it well... how can we do it better and faster with AI?

How @KentBeck thinks about AI coding tools and agents: "They're like a genie. They grant your wishes... but not quite how you expect it. Then you tell it that it's not what you wanted. 'Oh, I'm sorry...' The genie is good at apologizing. But it's not good at meaning it."

I'm a huge fan of #TDD because I find that it helps me do my best work, but the 3, 5, or 10 steps of the process can't think for you, can't encourage you to do the right thing, and can't force you to do anything. You still need to think, and reflect, and learn over time.

Assigning agency to techniques seems to me to be an attempt to avoid responsibility. “I used TDD & got poorly designed/unreliable/hard to understand code—not my fault.”
