for spooky season this year I wrote about Italo Calvino's remarkable 1967 lecture "Cybernetics and Ghosts", wherein he speculates about whether a machine could ever write great literature.

Found some content for something I’m learning about that was written ~10yr ago on a blog, and it’s weird how it now seems slightly quaint and old-fashioned to read. There’s a sense of luxury to how it assumes you have a long attention span, and it’s sad that people don’t anymore.

i like how in math you get to say "consider a function f from... etc" without any preamble and other mathematicians just have to consider it

finally wrote a short post about how the "spatial feed" works in Aurora! the spatial feed shows you posts, in real-time, from the neighborhood you're looking at. it's a brand new kind of discovery interface!

✨ new blog post from me and
@raymond.bsky.social
: "serializable transactions for peer-to-peer databases" we describe "eventually consistent rollback", a new way of handling conflicts in concurrent database transactions. ECR gives you atomicity and serializability, but not finality.

www.asayers.com/jetrelay/
[...] jetrelay, a pub/sub server compatible with Bluesky’s “jetstream” data feed. Using a few pertinent Linux kernel features, it avoids doing almost any work itself. As a result, it’s highly efficient: it can saturate a 10 Gbps network connection with just 8 CPU cores.

forgot to follow up about my Zig IPLD implementation - it works! I just cut v0.1.0 a few weeks ago with the release of Zig 0.14. it features two parallel APIs for working with either arbitrary heap-allocated values, or encoding to/from statically-typed Zig types. supports dag-cbor and dag-json.
