leaning into this text editor/visual editor dual, i've made the code colourer detect comments like /*====*/ and turn them into sliders. I really like how plain old source code remains the 'source of truth' for all state and the editor just doodles over it.

setting up a computer somewhere to continuously rerun your program to find a nondeterministic bug. once the bug appears, the computer halts the program and calls you on the phone, so you can connect a debugger and poke around that exact living program state

unwrap/expect is essentially a lesson in how defaults matter a lot; it's good that you can do the dangerous thing easily with a *little* bit of ceremony to make sure you don't do it unintentionally

The most important factor when designing the syntax of a programming language is how it communicates your language’s brand identity

It also feels slightly subversive and very Lispy to present "which syntax do you want?" at the beginning as just a surface customization, like choosing your editor's color scheme.

Everyone knows that "Preferences" should be found under Edit (because you edit them), under Tools (because they control the parameters of your tools), under General (because they are categorically broad), & under File (because a preference is a 'filing off' from a marble block of possibility)

I’d say it was like Kyle Chayka’s idea of “airspace” taken to a more extreme level, like a hyper-airspace, but I think that idea was more about common design attitudes than specific replication. The leaf wall is precisely duplicated like a logo without actually being one.

"Mark as Unread" brush that you can paint over a conversation to selectively mark messages (or even individual words or links or lines inside messages) as unread for you to revisit later

but yeah what should it be? take the timestamp of the message and mark all messages from then onward as unread… across all your conversations. ignore any request to "mark unread" if you've sent a reply after that point. you can't turn back the clock that easy.

i wonder if they discussed what "Mark as Unread" should mean for a chat does it mark the latest message as unread (incrementing total unread count by 1), does it mark the latest 'run' of N messages as unread, does it produce a 'synthetic' unread status that's different from the natural one?

In this image, the text the angels are holding seems to be printed on a soft piece of fabric rather than something more rigid like paper or stone. Maybe the history of using fabric or silk as a medium for printed information is something that still needs to be explored…

Have you ever seen a book made entirely of silk? One item getting a lot of reading room attention recently is this "Livre de Prières." This book was manufactured with the Jacquard process, which relied on perforated punch cards to operate a loom, and is considered a precursor to early programming.
