for all his reputation as a deep lore writer, a lot of tolkien’s skill with disturbing elements is actually the refusal to explain further. something Terrible happens to characters and we are not given the comfort of knowing what something was, Things stalk in the night and are never explained, etc.

This is a weird damn time to be writing books, let alone touring the country to promote 'em. It's a weird damn time to be queer. That means it's a great time to remember who came before us, the fun they might have had, and the lives they might have enjoyed, lived without our ever knowing.

If the publishing industry is crushing your ability to write, or at least to enjoy writing, there's nothing I recommend more highly than to take a break and write something else for which you don't have trad pub ambitions. It has absolutely saved me on multiple occasions.
