'Reading mania' is a serious and longstanding issue! Concerns about the moral hygiene of books and the uncouth obsessions they produce led many respectable figures to label it a dangerous disease. This was certainly not a manifestation of the allergy the powerful often have to being challenged.

One of the first things I learned as a professor is that accommodations don’t make the class/assessment easier — they just make it inclusive. Doing a moral panic on accommodations is just gross and ableist.

I saw some of this when analyzing election discourse on X a couple elections ago. At that time, it seemed to be mostly climate denial, wexit, and the PPC - in decreasing order of sophistication. I can only imagine how much worse it is now.

This is a huge part of the reason I spend so much time, here, honestly. Some platforms don't even allow Canadian news links. It's nice to be able to see what other people are reading and discuss it in real time.

I'm fully aware that this is a joke, but... I remember hearing about a judge who threatened a police officer with contempt if court for giving him a speeding ticket. IIRC, he swiftly became one of a very few Canadian judges to be removed from office.
