We are closing in on $70 BILLION dollars that Americans have had to pay in extra fuel costs since Feb 28 due to Trump's war on Iran. For context, the entirety of all federal support for research (thru NIH, NSF etc) costs $65B per year. A war for nothing but waste. iranwarcost.watson.brown.edu

No. Iran is not Vietnam or Afghanistan. It is not the same trap. In those wars, the US had a local partner, international support, and the Cold War or 9/11. And while the US lost those wars, that was the whole loss. Didn't lose freedom of navigation and control of a crucial international waterway.
