Unreal, the impact this is having on scientists. I spent over 700 hrs writing 4 grants submitted Apr-Sept that *might* have been funded next Apr; 2 abt to be 3 apps missed review bc of shutdown. In normal times takes 9-24 mo to get a grant funded. No hope for labs like mine. Literally no hope.

While the government was shut down, 379 NIH study section meetings (containing 24,380 grant applications) were postponed. NIH is committed to getting these reviewed, but please be patient and understanding with staff, as this is a complex and heavy lift.

The most common mistake I see with writers is assuming readers know way more than they readers do. Though, it looks a little different for ECRs vs Sr scholars. ECRs assume everyone knows all the background info. Sr scholars assume too much technical knowledge (As is obvious...) 2/2

The U of Arizona was building a new medical research facility in Phoenix, but it’s now on hold because of uncertain federal funding. It was proposed as a research hub to “find new ways to diagnose, prevent and treat cancers, infectious disease and autoimmune disorders”. Great job DOGE!

ICYMI, NIH will be asking soon for each NIH-funded researcher to justify every draw they make (often several times a week) on their grants and every NIH officer and their boss will have to justify their agreeing on these draws. This is the death of US biomedical research by a thousand cuts

YES!!! There is no magical pot of money waiting in Europe for scientists fleeing the US. And it sure as 💩 isn't in Canada, which has been foolishly slashing university funding and all research funding for YEARS. NZ has recently started doing the same. A lot of science will just die on the vine.

But this move is a cut. We are hearing approximately 150 SROs will be removed, out of approximately 600. That's in line with Berg's numbers. Removing SROs will slow grant review, and that will reduce grant funding.
