I sympathize with the sentiment of this graphic but cringe at the "energy flow" physics. We measure heat ("fuel") and work ("reaches wheels") in the same units, but they're not the same thing. And passengers' share of braking losses shouldn't be labeled "energy used to move people".

There are almost no crustaceans in the deep ocean. Not because they would get crushed, but because they would DISSOLVE. The cold & high pressure cause changes to water that make it very corrosive to calcium carbonate shells. But there's one crustacean who solves this problem with ALUMINUM ARMOR.

Next year, I’m thinking of students creating a large “scale of the universe” / “powers of ten” sort of thing on the wall of my classroom. Students are assigned an approximate length scale, and draw and label an object from that scale. One side of the room is atomic scale, the other galaxy 🎢 1/2

I’m a climate scientist. Let me fix this headline. “Nearly a century ago, scientists showed that burning fossil fuels warms the planet. Today, we know human emissions account for over 100% of the warming. Yet dark money and disinformation still work to keep Americans addicted to fossil fuels.”

Here's a cool pattern: If we divide the first n positive odd numbers by the next n positive odd numbers, we will always get 1/3. Here's why this makes sense.

Okay, children. Let's go over this again, because some of you are on the fucking remedial level here: If it doesn't have proper names or list a location and a search of the news outlet credited returns nothing, it's a fake. For fuck's sake people, TV news call signs are *four* letters. THINK.

Really enjoyed this article by Katie Hunt about the long, messy effort to measure a precise value for Big G. It's very accessibly-written (great for students!) and touches on a lot of important ideas in scientific measurement and error.
