I think any attempt to define modern ttrpg 'cultures of play' is a failure if it doesn't classify "5e/critrole fandom" as its own thing largely disconnected from other ttrpg (or analogue game) play-cultures, and instead largely drawing from fandom and fanfic subcultures.

Entire thread is great but this specific point, with reference to Kriegspiel is incredibly important. "Rulings" are not created from nothing, they emerge from context and experience. It's why OSR games, regardless of how "weird" they are, all largely exist in the same dungeoncore fantasy space.

It's also why a lot of indies are very adamant about the importance of Rules. Because they are inventing new contexts which only the writer intuitively knows.

A lot of PbtA games have adopted (or at least internalized, if not strictly mechanized) the "party" mode of play, but I really really like the ones that fit more into a mode of "you are the main cast of a tv show, whose plotlines will diverge and intersect"
