It's so funny that many dnd-only players have a "Serbian film through the eyes of a pigeon" complex, but the biggest "indies" are like, Teen Titans, Supernatural, and Another Dnd. Not even Scorcese-level Serious Drama (tm). It's all still very approachable fun genre fare.

Each edition of a game changes genre drastically in response to the metaplot. Like sword & sorcery -> survival horror -> post-apocalypse -> weird west The metaplot is told entirely through "examples of play" sections. The book itself contains clues to an ARG that is canon to the world.

The metaplot is way larger than the scope of the game. A game about cute animal adventures has political machinations that do not affect the game in any way. Tangentially, the metaplot in a game about cute animals is slowly revealed to be a work of classic fiction in the larger human world.

All games by a publisher have a canonical multiverse crossover. Same as above but breakout NPCs from a less popular game world end up in a more popular one. Same as above but the less popular game world is canonically destroyed; all games played in that world are flashbacks.

Alternately, major metaplot events are decided by the outcomes of UNRELATED competitive games. Take a page from League of Legends and decide the outcome of an in-universe war based on competitive League of Legends.

Interrogating violence in dungeon games by asking "why do you want to do this?" and they don't get a death blow until they come up with a rigorous justification for violence.

I think another question we could be asking is: how much do you engage with the works of your creative friends? I try hard to make a habit of it when I can because I know what it’s like to have someone you *know* connect with what you’ve made. it’s different than just anybody doing it.

Everyone talks about the influence of Guardians of the Galaxy in terms of like, movies being colorful or directed by James Gunn, but there's not enough copycat movies taking the core of "crew of underdog misfits in a non-horror space adventure"

The death of physical media seems like a small thing practically but in essence it represents the total dissolution of games as “objects of art” and instead reduces them purely to “intellectual property”. It’s a slow disaster but if you care about games as an art form it IS a disaster.

Worldbuilding should be considered a hobby almost entirely distinct from writing

It's great because the big companies doing this forces us indies with no money to spend a bunch of money in order to have a product to bring to the crowdfunder. It's kinda the reverse of how you'd think it would work.

a downer ending needs to be earned as much as a happy one. A lot of creators don't recognize how to make a good ending bc the ending is effectively your story's thesis bolded, underlined and highlighted - but it's common to feel like it's smothering to have to think about themes and not go on vibes
