The stupid thing about social media arguments about social media is that everyone who has them is a 40 year old arguing about which site frequented by 7% of the population is more relevant, meanwhile everyone under 25 is on something called Blooble inventing new words to scare us with

I think the question of "which place has better politics" is a non-starter. Trying to parse the politics of a mass platform is a fraught enterprise. Fundamentally, the question really is "which place am I less cringingly embarrassed to be associated with" and clearly that's Bluesky.

When Michael Jackson's HIStory came out, I had never heard of Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition. I had assumed that the opening bars were original to Jackson. I am still embarrassed about this. Sorry, Mussorgsky.

I wonder if this is because of the difference between cognition on a personal level and societal capabilities? Capability and performance are probably more closely linked at the level of the individual person. But even there there's still a gap (e.g. "riding a bike")

Was reminded recently of the existence of these photos (that I’d posted about previously) taken at the inaugural Kingaroy Peanut Festival in 1959. Revisiting these pics, I was surprised to learn that the first Peanut Festival Queen pictured here is Moya Hayden, mother of former test cricketer Matt 🥜

Sometimes you can find remnants of what the Internet used to be like: mini-essays, albeit often quite idiosyncratic and quirky, on random topics by well-informed amateurs. This page is from 1996 and talks about the PRC's character simplification.
