Asplenium scolopendrium, Hart's Tongue Fern, in the garden today for #FernFriday #FoliageFriday 🌱 This particular plant is believed to be 140+ years old. It was given to our family around 40 years ago by an elderly couple who had kept it in their family for over a century. A special & lovely plant!

Interrupted fern, Osmunda claytoniana Close up of the fertile fronds having recently emerged. The sporangia of interrupted fern are found in three fertile pinna about a third of the way up the plant. The rest of the pinna are sterile. Thus its name interrupted. #ferns #ferns

With info kindly provided by @sim-elliott.bsky.social and the assistance of my eagle-eyed son, I was thrilled to see a lovely big patch of Tunbridge Filmy-fern, Hymenophyllum tunbrigense, in the High Weald yesterday. The sori look like minute circular bivalve shells. #FernFriday

The nectaries are frequented by early bumble bees and ants. Roughly 500 species of ferns have nectaries (but no flowers).

Pteridium aquilinum (Bracken) crozier pushing through last year's fronds. The fine brown hairs quickly disappear, but at the moment they highlight the extra-floral nectaries (two green glossy glands) at the pinnal junctions. #fernFriday #nectar
