Almost all Nobel Prizes are awarded for work that is exploratory, or absolutely basic science with no obvious commercial or medical benefit. You cannot predict where advancements come from, so you have to invest in science and scientists. Targeted (corporate) science investment will never do this.

We just pushed “Memory by a 1000 rules” onto bioRxiv, where we use clever #ML to find #plasticity quadruplets (EE, EI, IE, II) that learn basic stability in spiking nets. Why is it cool? We find 1000s!! of solutions, and they don’t just stabilise. They #memorise! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Hello world, my first post in Bluesky! Adaptation to a frequent stimulus reduces neuronal activity but increases discriminability in V1. These two effects can be observed as well in the geometry of representations and they are reproduced in an ANN with metabolic constraints.

I hate to be the guy who chimes in to hype his own work, but this is precisely one of the reasons we built project-improv.github.io. Being able to run some lightweight analyses or visualizations (e.g., with github.com/fastplotlib/...) in real time is an incredible intuition pump.

Interesting point here. How do we better visualize/hear/feel the data in real-time, so we can quickly pick follow-up experiments?

i think i will be ok w/ not using the word 'consciousness' in research papers from here, coz my focus is on perception & memory. sometimes we may have to emphasize that a process is nonconscious. but for the noun form, c-ness, we can leave it to ppl to refer to e.g. coma when the patients lost it

in neuroscience there's a cottage industry "reading out" neural representations with linear or nonlin decoders which "decode" or "reconstruct" the image. there must be a similar literature for ANNs? I want to see what the reconstructions look like for eg CIFAR, layer by layer...references plz ?
