This lab makes it possible for the NWS to forecast severe weather at the level we do. They can do much more too. If lost there’s no going back to fix it.

As we’re gearing up for tornado season, taking weather balloons offline in the Heartland of the US, also known as Tornado Alley, will directly affect the NWS’s ability to predict severe weather, including tornado-producing thunderstorms. This could lead to more severe weather-related deaths.

With the Avola-Noto tornado upgraded to IF2, the January 17th Sicily outbreak is the most impressive tornadic event in Italy during January to date, with longest path, most tornadoes and most (I)F2+ tornadoes, as well as the most single January tornadoes known. Luckily nobody was hurt

I will miss my friend Charles A. Doswell III. Chuck was an outstanding scientist and inspiring teacher. At the core of his work was the motivation to improve warnings and save lives. He supported the European Severe Storms research and weather sagety community A LOT.

A great person has passed away. I learnt so much from him, first from his website, then met him in person and worked with him while he provided so much support to the nascent severe storms community in Europe. I am very, very grateful to him.
