Perfect demonstration of the fact that you don't need straight hodographs to get left-moving supercells (In this case, storms are rooted at ~2km)

Looking back at a great #ECSS conference last week, where I also gave my first conference talk. It was great to meet people that I so far had only met online, and to reconnect with many others! Also first time I saw in person a number of big names in svr storms from the US @essl-ecss.bsky.social

From 4/27/2011, a short multi-tilt storm-following loop from ARMOR of the Hackleburg tornado. Some pretty incredible temporal resolution is possible like this when you interleave the different tilts! You get some shakiness but overall this turned out quite incredible. Love the merger stream!

In the end, today we confirmed five tornadoes (landfalling waterspouts), three of which can be rated (IF0.5, IF1 and IF1.5). Two more additional possible tornadoes occurred, but those will have to wait

8 months ago I had a vision: what if we had a unified, track-based dataset of all severe events? Still a lot of improvements I can make to the algorithm itself, but otherwise, looks like we have one now. I can't wait to see what we can do with this 👀

Late yesterday evening featured some strongly rotating storms over the Irish Sea, which were nicely captured by the Dublin radar. Had they occurred over land, we would likely have seen tornado reports.

OTD in 1964 one of Sicily's black tornado days: a first twister developed in the sea and impacted the town of Santa Croce Camerina, where it killed 5 people and injured 70+. Cars were lofted and homes/farms destroyed (rating pending, further documentation can be gathered)

Annotating a long 3+ day loop of #Hurricane #Melissa from Kingston, #Jamaica radar. 2️⃣ periods appear where an eyewall replacement cycle, #ERC, looked underway. In both cases, inner eyewall stayed intact & outer bands merged, resulting in a larger eye & strengthening after. A remarkable evolution 🌀

The start point of the path here nicely matches up with the location where the presumed TDS first appeared, increasing confidence that it was indeed a TDS. Note by the way that the strong looking couplet on the third image is a dealiasing failure. First image provides most useful doppler data.

October 27th, 1913: An outbreak of at least eight tornadoes impacted England and Wales. One tornado caused estimated F3 damage to the Taff Valley towns of Abercynon and Edwardsville, where many houses were unroofed. 1/2

Possible tornado in SW Germany yesterday. And possibly with a radar-detected TDS, as there is a small CC hole at the location of reported damage. At least this CC hole is not from ground clutter (as is the case for quite some of the green spots in the RGB), as it's not visible at surrounding times.

Radar loop of the low-topped supercell that produced yesterday's deadly tornado in France: streamable.com/wpo049. The lack of the nearby Trappes radar sadly meant that the storm wasn't sampled below 2 km AGL, which is quite a limitation. But we can see a clear supercell structure with mesocyclone.

Tornadoes in France today. At least one death and 9 injuries, unfortunate but somewhat inevitable when a significant tornado (seems to be at least an IF2 to me) strikes such a populated area. Europe has a severe lack of tornado awareness and when a violent one will strike a highly populated area...

We are not yet done in France. Strong rotation near Metz now, suggesting tornado potential. I'm also seeing a small CC minimum for 2 scans now, which might be a small TDS.

There now is indeed a low-topped supercell close to the not-functioning Trappes radar. And there are additional supercells in northern France and southern Belgium.

Interesting setup over NW and N France today, with clear tornado potential given strongly curved low-level hodographs and sufficient CAPE. And sadly another setup where we are missing the Trappes radar, which is out of service for replacement since 10 months now...

Very good, Bram! It was indeed 20.05.2006. That was the biggest summetime tornado outbreak since at least 2000 for Central Europa, with 16 confirmed tornadoes in the ESWD. Graphic shows wind and tornado reports of that day.

OTD in 1884 the likely most violent tornado known in Sicily struck northern Catania. Through the research conducted by our friend Paolo Torrisi and working closely with @essl-ecss.bsky.social staff, the tornado, which killed 28 people and injured up to 600 more, has been rated IF4 but the rating...

Now the #tornado stripes seperated into strength. The second graphic shows weak (IF0 - IF1.5) vs. strong (IF2+) tornadoes. There is a disproportionately high maximum of strong tornadoes in the first 10 years compared to weak tornadoes. The average was 9 compared to 3 in the 10 years that followed.

947.9 hPa at 05 UTC this morning at Baltasound is provisionally the lowest October pressure ever recorded at a UK station - substantially beating the previous record of 950.9 hPa by 3 hPa!

OTD in 1897 the worst known Apulia tornado left a 40 km long path of devastation, impacting especially the towns of Sava and Oria. Homes were leveled while others got their furniture sucked out of windows, grass and dirt were scoured and olive trees were debarked

OTD an outbreak of 7 tornadoes struck the Po Valley, four of them can be rated as IF2.5. Despite towns and villages being directly struck, as well as close calls at the Fossoli di Carpi airfield, incredibly nobody was injured
