Hi Bram! 0 tornadoes, there was a phase of strong low level rotation, but nothing on the ground. No damage at all actually, aside from hail and rain. If there had been a tornado, we would have known by now, it's a very populated area

I think we just got 1 or 2 tornadoes in northern Italy from this supercell. It had a hook for 2 time intervals, and during the first interval it seemed to have a TDS (in reply).

What's one way the RFD might be important? Inflow-outflow balance I.e., collecting pre-tornadic vert-vorticity (vortex patches) beneath the low-level meso (LLMC) such that it can be stretched into tornadic intensity. When the RFD isn't surging "forward", vortices may be... 🧵

13 years ago today an impressive (small) outbreak of 4 tornadoes affected the Emilia-Romagna plain. Three of them can be rated as IF3 and the fourth as IF2. Aside from the heavy damage especially to farms, at least 13 people in total were injured by the tornadoes. Very large hail occurred as well

The Enid, OK EF4 tornadic supercell had a ZDR column area of 70 square km (from our algorithm) ~1 km above the 0˚ C level just prior to tornado formation, consistent with the violent tornadoes from our 2021 paper and others we've looked at since (annotated in updated box plots). 🤔

This news begs of course for another 3D view. This time of a storm that had a very impressive BWER, or well.. it was actually only bounded on the sides and not so much at the top. What this storm also nicely shows is that you don't need very high dBZ for huge hail.

Yesterday's giant hail producing supercell in Texas didn't feature a BWER or very impressive echo overhang prior to producing this hail. But something that does stand out is how tall the hail core is, with 73 dBZ measured at 13 km altitude!

A 3D view of the impressive LM supercell over Missouri yesterday with giant hail. Besides the impressive hail core itself with reflectivity up to 75 dBZ, we can see a large area with echo overhang and a bit of a BWER, indicative of large and strong updraft. Slanted hail core indicates strong shear.

A look at an impressive hailstorm in Arkansas from yesterday, that produced giant hail. Besides the large 60+ dBZ hail core, we can see a large region of echo overhang associated with the storm's updraft, indicating a wide and powerful updraft.

An elevated hail-producing supercell in Northern Italy from last night:

Yesterday we had the first (very) large hail event in north Italy, as a supercell descended from Como Lake into the Milan-Monza metroplex with hailstones up to 5-5.5 cm and producing damage to cars + 2 known injuries. Radar hail size estimation taken from meteologix.com

Nice hail core on this low-topped supercell in Northern France a while ago. It probably contained a large amount of small hail.

So there may be a major severe weather outbreak around the western shore of the Persian Gulf this Thursday. Incredible synoptic setup for the region.

Pretty storm interaction over the Mediterranean near southern France. An almost stationary, regenerating storm gets overtaken by a small line of storms from the northwest. A decent mesocyclone forms when the storm gets overtaken, and then slowly decays while the line keeps moving southeast.

One of the more fascinating phenomena to watch in this experimental polarimetric RGB remains the ejection and fallout of tornadic debris. The combination of low RhoHV (CC) and low ZDR leads to greenish-yellowish colors for debris, while precipitation often has red/blue/purple colors.

INCREDIBLE footage from earlier this evening from the 43 Fire just southwest of Woodward, Oklahoma! Absolutely INSANE firewhirls in the main fire line as it very quickly advanced northeast towards Woodward!

Overnight thunderstorms (at least one was supercellular) brought hail and intense wind damage in Apulia (between Oria and Brindisi), we will have to investigate to try and understand if there was a tornado. What a way to wake up!

While I had my focus on the northern one of 2 cells near FR-BE border this evening, the southern one actually produced a tornado. @corentinaugris.bsky.social found a report of damage in Cousoire (without photos yet), and radar shows a very convincing brief TDS here.

Impressive low-level meso currently. And a bit earlier there was a CC minimum inside the hook, but since it was embedded in a large region of low CC I doubt that it was a TDS.

Quite a suspicious looking storm near the French-Swiss border a while ago

It's not the best time for the French radar network, with 5 radars inoperational currently (and not counting that 1 X-band close to Italy)

Météo-France has now provided me with the full dataset for Trappes for the Ermont IF2 tornado, which killed 1 person and injured at least 9. In this storm-following loop you can see a strong RFD surge leading up to the tornado:

En plus de la très médiatisée tornade de Mios, un autre phénomène venteux s'est produit hier, à 12h20, sur la commune de Saint-Simon-de-Pellouaille (Charente-Maritime). Les témoignages font état de dégâts sur les toitures et la végétation. Pour l'heure, nous n'avons qu'une seule image de dégâts.
