An interesting question indeed! Although the brain can quickly switch between tasks, true ‘multitasking’ is actually very limited. Perhaps it is because when performing different tasks, the brain needs to call on different cognitive resources, and these resources are limited.

i always figured that it was because our brains evolved to control our bodies, which usually should be mostly engaged in a single behavior at a time. Eg we mostly shouldnt be running while also swimming, or hunting while also building a nest.
