He wasnāt a vehicle for a nice baseball story. He was a person who deserved to be honored for his courage, his determination, and as a person. Maybe players donāt care about the minutia of baseball history. But they sure care about Jackie Robinson.

Players wearing number 42 was them taking back a piece of the story from Baseballās propaganda machine. Newspaper writers bemoaned the players not caring about baseball history, not caring about the trivia. This was an act by Black players showing that Jackie was important even 50, 60 years later.

In 1997, Baseball wanted full credit for its progressivism and foresight, its commitment to equality. Vaughnās concerns about the number being packed up and put away, and Griffey wearing it made big statement. Jackie wasnāt just a symbol, or an easy story with a moral ending.

In the years after Jackie Robinson desegregated baseball and Black players found homes on every team (it took a long time to get there!), after the Civil Rights Movement, after it was no longer socially acceptable to be outwardly racist, Baseball was eager to toot its horn about how it led the way.

This player-led movement isnāt just a dress-up day. Itās an important part of Jackieās legacy. Capital-b Baseball segregated when it embraced a āgentlemanāsā agreement to keep Black players out of organized baseball. Eventually the lure of a competitive advantage overrode those sensibilities.

Several other players joined him in 2007. A couple years later, in 2009, all uniformed personnel began wearing number 42. Griffey certainly wasnāt the first player to wear number 42 because of Jackie Robinson. But he was a catalyst in making sure the number stayed alive, like Mo Vaughn wanted.

In 2007, for the 60th anniversary of Robinsonās debut, he did the same thing. This time, he called Commissioner Bud Selig and asked for permission. Selig asked Robinsonās widow, Rachel, and she agreed. Selig told Griffey he could, then suggested allowing other players to join. Jr loved the idea.

Jr also blacked out the Nike logo on his custom cleats, along with the other Nike logos on his uniform. āThis is the way he wore his uniform and shoes,ā Griffey said. He also said of the high socks, āIt got a little cold for these bird legs. From the knees down it was freezing.ā

The Jackie Robinson Foundation had approached Jr before the season, asking if heād honor Jackie by wearing 42 all season. He talked it over with his dad, who said that number 42 was special and it was Jackieās number. They decided it would have more of an impact if he changed it for Jackieās day.

That day, April 15, 1997 the Mariners were playing the second of a 2-game series in Cleveland. Nobody suspected anything until Ken Griffey Jr took the field wearing all-black cleats, knee-high socks, and number 42. He was the first player to change his number to honor Jackie Robinson on April 15.

On the 50th anniversary of Robinsonās debut MLB retired his number 42 across baseball. Players currently wearing the number were allowed to keep it, including Mo Vaughn, who was outspoken about wearing it in honor of Jackie. He knew the number was special and wanted it ākept alive.ā

It appears he was being flippant because he later said his family talked about the ball players of the past, including Robinson, at the dinner table from a young age. I imagine he wasnāt interested in having that conversation with a white magazine reporter looking for pithy quotes. And FAIR!

When it comes to Jr itās not always obvious whether heās being serious or if heās being flippant because heās uninterested in the discussion being foisted upon him. (Some people have said this makes him immature and unprofessional. I recognize it as pure introvert energy and think itās beautiful.)

First, in the January 1989 issue of Sport Magazine, a number of Black players were asked, āWhat does Jackie Robinson mean to you?ā Ken Griffey Jr replied, āI donāt know anything about Jackie Robinson.ā
