A little outside my usual style and genre, I have a literary fiction story (about baseball — kind of) out in the Twin Bill’s All-Star issue. Really love the original art by Dominick Porto that accompanies the story, too. Captures its feeling really well.

New story up at ergot. What if an insular patriarchal cargo cult founded on the New Testament epistles and a few soggy bits of Peter Pan were sacrificing its children to endless war with the birds? What if not all the middle kids and archaeopteryxes follow the script?

Writing tip: Give your protagonist a pet cat. In the final pages, shift to the cat's point of view. Follow the cat outside, through moonlit woods, to a pasture where cows kneel in worship around a glowing spacecraft. As the cat trots up its gangway, we glimpse in the windows an all-cat crew.

Neat thread. "Realism"--in film, in narration, etc., etc.--is a magic trick. It's the opposite of unmediated--an artifice designed to produce the *appearance* of the real. And this isn't a bad thing. It's unavoidable, a fundamental part of how representation and expression work!
