As we all know, weird fiction isn’t just bizarre happenings: it troubles genre boundaries, it insists on the inexplicable and unresolvable, and it dedicates itself to the unsettling of the (story)world.

As fantasy and science fiction writers move away from Chosen One/Great Man stories, we can either portray the stories of many protagonists, their contributions coming together, or (especially in short fiction), look to collective—though not homogeneous—protagonists.

The eighth story in Saros #5, "This Was the Planet of Sound" by @improbablerex.bsky.social, is a perfect example of what I was looking for when I sent out the call for stories about sound and silence--and simply a perfect story in its own right. This is how I want to feel when I read short fiction.

ergot. is firing on all cylinders, this Ian Kappos story is one of the best things I've read this year. Ian is one of the most under-hyped writers of strange, irreal, genre-melding speculative fiction. Read Ian Kappos, people.

One of my favorite pieces of literary criticism comes at the end of Guy Davenport's essay "The Geography of Imagination." He does a lengthy material (and social) analysis of American Gothic. a history of the balloon frame house; of glasses; of buttonholes on modern clothing; denim overalls.
