I think about this re: photography all the time, a medium in which the artifice is often less obvious. There's no such thing as an unmediated photo of a bird. Give me twenty by different photographers of the same finch, and they'll all transform it, even pre-edit, with technical/aesthetic choices.

I didn't grow up with comics, which meant my entry point came around the corner via the graphic novel. Persepolis, alongside Maus, fundamentally changed my understanding of the medium. It opened up a new universe of visual storytelling, from high to low and everything between. RIP Marjane Satrapi.
