My shuttle driver today spent chunk of his career working in mines and was telling me all kinds of cool stuff about it. Later in the conversation he mentioned that something he is interested in doing someday is going to the Belmont Stakes and I got all excited because that's something I've done.

I have done a lot of work with public data systems and encountered LOTS of cases where a private or philanthropic investment shapes the initial direction of a tech or data and then that's what's there. Staff may not like or want it and govt often ends up picking up the tab after the initial grant.

Oh and also on the topic of extreme political views the Urban Center Action language on "The Institution of the Family" has strong echoes of the Heritage Foundations "family" language used in Project 2025 arguably one of the most politically extreme and radioactive policy documents out there.

I read the thread again and there are in fact ways to make sure that a rising tide lifts all boats but that is fundamentally a public minded urge and private money will not just do that in any kind of significant way.

When we talk about gentrification we are talking about a bunch of different things that frequently move together and so we need to be clear about what we mean. Mostly gentrification is a form of neighborhood change that involves changes to the population and built environment but there's more.

the lack of clear lines separating these types of tools for different types of work and reference has terrible consequences and as many people have pointed out, is already degrading our whole knowledge ecosystem.

My state rep Mike Kelly has started sending out lit and just because a guy has pulled a Republican primary ballot here and there does that automatically make him an issue? The Dem committee in our area felt comfortable enough to appoint him to a vacancy so im sure they checked his politics.
