For nearly 30 years, Congress has fully funded WIC so every eligible low-income family who applies can receive full benefits. The bipartisan Senate proposal would maintain this vital commitment, but the House version would cut benefits & risk eligible families being turned away.

One notable way Senate Republicans made the SNAP cuts even worse: the bill would now take food assistance away from 270,000 low-income people who are veterans, experiencing homelessness, or who recently aged out of foster care.

CBO has indicated 900,000 low-income adults aged 55 through 64 will lose food assistance under the expansion of SNAP's harsh work requirement to older adults. Older workers face employment discrimination & half of low-income adults in this age range face health barriers to work.

Underappreciated aspect of Senate Republicans' unfunded mandate for SNAP: they're setting states up to fail. The amount is tied to a state's SNAP error rate. But the bill: -Cuts federal $ for strategies that reduce errors *in half* -Adds new & error-prone red tape requirements

Example of how absurd Republicans' SNAP cost-shift plan is: North Carolina's 2024 SNAP error rate is about half a percentage point higher than 2023 & still below the national average. That tiny increase—some of which may be random chance in sampling cases—would cost the state an extra ~$150 million.

Based on new USDA data released today, 44 states would have to pay tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars under Senate Republicans' #SNAP cost-shift plan. If a state can't fully pay, they would have to cut many low-income families off SNAP or end their program altogether.
