But not to oversell my Hispanic heritage. I did grow up in Miami, and my dad immigrated from the Dominican Republic and my mom moved to the mainland from Puerto Rico. They met in New York City. And I was a jackass and rejected learning Spanish or leaning much into the culture growing up.

I guess to put it simply, a lot of staples in the foods from places like Mexico aren’t the same as stuff from the Latin American islands in the Caribbean. I never grew up with most of the foods that define Mexico uniquely. It’s still delicious though!

I was at Publix doing last minute holiday meal shopping and when I was in the Hispanic food section of the international aisle, they separated it between Caribbean and Central America, which was neat distinction. It’s kind of hard to explain, but the distinction was nice.
