One of my best design memories happened at Spiel. My daughter and I had designed Hungry Monkey together, a small card game based on the Swedish traditional game Skitgubbe (Sh*thead in English). We loved it as our little family game, so when HeidelBÄR decided to publish it, I was over the moon. 🎲✂️🧵

I am begging board game designers/publishers to PLEASE stop putting background images behind text on cards, in rulebooks, & on player aids. There are SO MANY neurodivergent people & people with vision issues whose brains have great difficulty trying to process this type of visual content.

I really had never appreciated the value of the hard parts of creative work fully before genAI showed up with its genie-like offer of shortcuts, or understood what a trap those shortcuts truly are. Even though humanity has been telling cautionary stories about genies and fae bargains for millennia!

A micro-expansion for Whirling witchcraft?! Oh yes!

Play tested Waves a bit more yesterday, replacing the silvery waterslide with a more modest canal. With some simple rules changes it gave a lit of agency to the players even if the core randomness of the waves are still there.

Got to play a prototype by @eanderssonsunden.bsky.social called Craters. Super clever mancala euro game that just flowed so seamlessly once we got into it. And the player interaction was such a great middle ground of meaningful but not mean. Hoping it gets picked up soon - it's great!

Had a great playtest yesterday with My kingdom. The new Chronicle mechanic felt like it fit like a glove! And it is a great way to add some thematic ”glow”

In my current project, My kingdom, I am introducing a chronicle. Each time you score you write a new part of your chronicle. When you ha e 7 parts, it triggers the end of the game.

Played Zoomies by @magnusuptime.bsky.social with the family today. Once my daughter realized the take that possibility and meddled with my plans, she started liking it. Easy to teach and plays fast. But it doesn't really shine until you think outside your own little solitaire. #boardgames

Yikes. Assembling quotes for a reprint of a $40 MSRP board game. The latest to come in is a US printer with a price over $18 per copy. (If $40 is the MSRP, then we are actually getting 40% of that amount when we sell to distributors, or $16, and we pay the cost of shipping to them.)
