This dynamic exists in deaf communities too. Sign language interpreters can feel free to give or withhold their services based on how much they like a deaf person. You always have to be super likable to avoid that dynamic emerging.

I have been intentional abt reading from different sources. I find myself respecting conservatives who challenge Republicans’ narratives & liberals who challenge Democrats’ narratives. I am increasingly not a fan of the religious-like, all-or-nothing outlook on complicated topics. 1/3

Science has always been political. To assume otherwise is either willful or blissful ignorance. There are no systems without analyses of power, and politics is about power.

Question for #blind or #deafblind people: are tactile posters a thing that would be welcomed? Poster sessions at conferences tend to be visual - could/should they be tactile as well? And maybe a tactile layout of the conference? Not instead of a protactile interpreter, but in addition to.

I started as a shy grad student scared of making a fool of myself in front of the biggest names in my field (1/~3)

Great poster session at #ACEDHH2025! Cool research happening and it's exciting for people to discuss their work 1-on-few. Also, and maybe it's just me, but I like when people that give full presentations also do posters about their work. Posters don't only have to be for grad students.

NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research. Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions

Our new paper just got published at Nature Human Behavior! www.nature.com/articles/s41... We study trust in science in 68 countries and how it relates to other variables. It was wild to be part of this project 👌✨

This is just the beginning. The subsequent restructuring of NIH will have a long-lasting impact on the global landscape of medical science research. Expect a "brain drain effect" as scholars in the US leave to other countries. Expect the US to become much weaker in medical science and technology.

Feeling disheartened by the low amount of signing at #TISLR15 conference. It makes me even more grateful for the changes I have seen at #ACEDHH conferences, where hearing folks have increasingly switched from speaking to signing in the past few years.

Maybe the field isn’t ready yet for a #NoTalkTISLR but at the next conference we *could* perhaps have two parallel streams of on-stage presentations, one without interpreting, as a way to ease us towards a sign-only future? #TISLR15

For #NoTalkTISLR to happen at future TISLR meetings, I think we may have to change the fundamental space of the presentations. More workshops, more posters for direct signing?

It still surprises me to see spoken language being used to present research on sign language at a sign language conference. I can’t help but feel like there is a major disconnect there 🥴🫠 #TISLR15

A question - The ACTFL provides guidelines on the time required for students to achieve proficiency in a language based on hours of instruction. ASL is classified as a Category IV language (I think), which requires over 2,000 hours to achieve proficiency. Now I wonder...(1/2)

I wish I could work with all my conference and life besties. No, not work. Exist with and occasionally do "professional" stuff with. I have great people... at different universities, in different countries. I want to be with my besties, all the time, doing whatever.

Also, to be clear, most mainstream schools don't care about the education deaf students receive. Deaf school: I was certified ELA, they gave me a reading class, and said I had to be certified in Reading too. Mainstream: I had 3 math classes, 3 social studies classes, 1 ELA, and computers.

Can’t wait for the Association of College Educators - Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ACE-DHH) conference next month! I have missed my deaf education academic friends and look forward to reconnecting. Excited to learn about current research in the field!

Just for reference: between the devices themselves and the cost of surgery, my son's CIs cost our insurance six figures just to get them implanted. This doesn't count ongoing maintenance, consumables, audiology visits, etc...

Deaf people and our communities are economically exploited with little in return from birth until death. Most of this happens until the age of 18-21. After 18, you're also derided as a taxpayer burden if you dont magically overcome societal failures and barriers to get a job. Some examples below
