Saw this the other day - “If you ever worry that you don’t have what it takes to be a writer, you were born to be one. Normal people literally never think about writing.”. And that just made some things click.

Out: Write drunk edit sober In: think about writing to the point of obsession while drunk but be incapable of crafting a coherent sentence and then shut down after getting no work done and then wake up the next morning with no recollection of any ideas you had the night before

Writing is fine. It's literally the most embarrassing thing on earth to put yourself on full display for rejection or validation, but it's fine. I enjoy it. I find it therapeutic to set myself on fire.

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research. I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.

I've been a writer my whole life and I've learnt that those days you don't feel like writing, those weeks where you make no progress, those months where you haven't thought a single creative thought... they pass. Don't obsess. Have faith. It comes back.

I started being regularly published when I was 25. I didn't make my first dollar writing until I was 30. I didn't sell my first novel or screenplay until I was 35. Many of you hadn't even heard of anything I'd written until I was over 40. You have time. There is no expiration date on writers.

Some writers are planners and know what will happen every step of the way. Some writers are pantsers and discover the story as they go along. Some writers are feral demon herders, desperately hanging onto any thread of a story, covered in blood, screaming as it drags them along.

This is how you become a writer: just pick one of the things that is deeply wrong with you. Make it a character. Now send it on a self-help journey or try to kill it. Now call it a book.

Please don't call what RFK Jr. and Jay Bhattacharya are going to do medieval. It's not medieval. It's nothing like the Middle Ages. People in the Middle Ages were happy to try all kinds of things to not die of the plague and if you'd given them antibiotics and vaccines they would have loved it.
