Unfortunately for the comic book community, I am once again voraciously reading comics. This week it has been: -Ducks by Kate Beaton (substack essay incoming) - Spectators by BKV and Henrichon - Mickey Mouse and the Amazing Lost Ocean by Filippi and Camboni - Jimmy Corrigan by Ware

I read Vaughan and Henrichon's newest this morning. It was an interesting take on how we've all become passive viewers of increasingly graphic depictions of violence and sex in the age of the smart-phone. I do feel like Vaughan's reliance on "jump scare" moments of graphic content is wearing thin.

I'm floored once again by Si Spurrier and Matias Bergara's fantasy comic Coda. This feels like one of the truly unique takes on the genre from the last decade. I'm excited to talk about it tonight!

I'm less and less interested in art from people who have no life to draw from. Comics rehashing the absolutely, tototally tubular x-men plot from when you were 10 doesn't cut it. Those comics have vitality because Claremont wasn't a stay-at-home loser. Go get some mud on your shoes before writing.

If nothing else, my podast provides HUNDREDS of hours of exactly how I speak, so no one will ever have to wonder about whether or not I used an LLM to write my novels. For better, or worse, those suckers sound exactly like me.

Read Saga Volumes 10-12 and I can understand maybe volume 10 feeling a little slow and “get everyone back up to speed”-y, but I think the rest of it reads just as intensely as the first half of the Series ran. It still slaps

I miss comics twitter. I hated comics twitter. But I miss being able to talk with strangers about comic books on a regular basis. This strange website has not filled that void for me.

Ultimately, I think the astronomical popularity of Saga despite delays, no previous "IP", or comic-marketing-nonsense like 1:10 variants, boils down to its distinct voice and strong thesis. So many comics get by on *either* the art or writing actually having a voice, and with no thesis at all.

Should I start commenting on comic books again on social media, I will unfortunately bring this vibe to the platform

My brain this week is 33% Infinite Jest, 33% Oasis reunion tour, 33% paleontology youtube videos, and 1% anger at the amount of screentime dinosaurs actually got in that new godforsaken Jurassic World movie.

The Green Lantern is a comic so good it makes me want to start posting about comics on social media again (a no good, dirty habit)

I loved every second of Planetary, and I agree with its thesis: Superheroes have robbed comics of how diverse and weird they once were.

I love comic books, but it's hard to find time for reading anything that isn't for @cmxcollective.bsky.social when my choice is "You haven't read Faulkner yet" of "They're saying Hal Jordan is doing something a little bit different this time." Only so much time!
