I wasn't really familiar with John Cheever but had a copy of his stories sitting on my shelf. I read The Swimmer (obvs) and then randomly, The Scarlet Moving Van. I was a bit surprised these were perfect examples of weird fiction. At least to me. The Swimmer feels like an American Aickman story.

This is really bugging me. I'm not a responsible or functional enough person to own wireless headphones.

Structure this argument more. What is your evidence for this?! Make this connection explicit. Cite more.

I've tried Affinity and Word now for typesetting and I can't get the bottom of the main text to line up consistently throughout the book. It often puts a line+ sized gap at the bottom of a page where there is no break in the text. If anyone knows a solution to this I would really appreciate it.

Once again startled by the sound of distant battle cries – perhaps ghostly soldiers of the English Civil War trapped for eternity in the moment before their deaths? Oh, no, it's over-excited middle-aged men playing football in the park round the corner.

Started writing something new for the first time in over a year and got down a 4k word story draft from nowhere in about three days. Took me by surprise tbh. Going to try an keep doing this.

Write something and then work out why you've written it by writing something else. And so on... That basically sums up my writing method.

I can't sort this with word with my abilities. I'm going to have to try and get it done within a free trial of InDesign I think. 30 bloody quid a month it is.

Excellent essay here discussing how the language of science limits its capacity to understand consciousness and even itself. "Science presupposes consciousness. It cannot ground its own presuppositions without stepping outside of its usual domain of application."

Typesetting this novel was fun at first, seeing it all come together like that, but now I've met the seemingly unresolvable problem of unflush bottoms.

I've never been closer to publishing my first novel. I think it might actually happen this time. Maybe February. Pretty much just finalising the cover and typesetting left. And the bloody back cover text. Absolute nightmare.

Currently reading this for the first time. Very much taken by the mysticism-infused ambiguous weirdness so far.
