Having written Saltburn, which contains the story Aquarium, about a French and an English aquarium over the decades I had to come to the aquarium here in Saint-Malo. And what fish!

I went into an actual French wine shop. Like an expert. Walked around. Picking up bottles. Examining them. Like an expert. And bought a bottle because it had a picture of a dog on the front.

I’ve taken the bateau-bus to Dinard. Where all the movie stars have doors, the beaches are crowded and the coastal walks are fraught with danger. I have an Eric Rohmer film lined up for later.

I’m reading One Boat (Jonathan Buckley) so by rights I should be in crisis, having a wild affair, meeting a murderer, meeting the murdee, noting the sea, the weather. But no one has spoken to me. I’ve had chicken curry. Had a glass of wine. And now to my cabin to watch a movie. Perfect.

Made it. Sun deck. No sun. Perfect.

Made it to Portsmouth Harbour. It’s all very glamorous. Airbnb has cancelled and refunded. And I’m hoping the new place I’ve booked will be ok.

Holiday going well. Tube strike in London meant I had to walk from St Pancras to Waterloo. (Nice walk to be fair.) Sat down on train and my apartment in Saint- Malo cancelled. Water leak! Have now booked a new apartment. What next? 😬😂
