When you do alt text on social media, you want to imagine that instead of the image, people only get the alt text. Does your post/thread still make sense? Are people getting the same information you expected them to get from the image? That's the purpose of alt text and actually how it works.

Going to try again because I think this maybe wasn't enough. Let's go back to the start again. Alt text was introduced to HTML in 1993 for situations where images didn't load or loaded slowly. In those situations the alt text is visible in the space where the image would have loaded. Example:
