Ross was briefly my intern over a decade ago. He was a fine enough guy but the copy was *unreadable* I wanted to fire him as an unpaid intern. Another editor felt bad for him and took over the job of wholly rewriting his work. I told them he could stay as long as I never saw the raw copy.

To me, Ross Barkan has long been evidence of how some legacy outlets' quality has gone way down as they rely on permalancers and lower rates. He also proves outlets' hunger to have a supposed progressive or expert on the left who actually peddles reactionary centrist takes.

These examples were highlighted by @drewharwell.com - whose work was copied - and the NPR reporter. Ross didn't respond to Drew for days. Then, he turned to the refuge of the weakest and shadiest people, complaining about being reached out to for comment. As a reporter, this is laughable.

A hyperlink or citation is not a licence to steal or barely rewrite someone else's language. Also, he didn't hyperlink or cite this stuff. Coming up with structure and clearly expressing things is a big part of the job. He stole other peoples' work.

There are multiple examples of Ross clearly either copying and pasting large amounts of text from other outlets or using AI. As a writer, I can think of virtually no other explanation. None of this would be improved or solved with a "citation."

Ross Barkan's plagiarism mini scandal has barely been discussed on Bluesky. We should be taking note of it. Especially since, now that he has responded on Twitter, his explanations are ridiculous.

This tweet, for a Ross Barkan story that copied my lede and reporting, now has more than 10x the views of the original. Ross hasn't apologized or acknowledged it; maybe he's just waiting for me to shut up. Without any explanation, I'm left to wonder how many times he's done this
