It would be excessively shallow of me to say that Nuzzi has traded on her appearance and on her conformity to beauty standards that are very white- and right-coded, but I also think it's unquestionably part of how she has put out mediocre work for years and survived in a tough field.

Then the stuff about her palling around with white supremacists came out and I wasn't shocked. The thing about buying into those extreme beauty standards is that in the US they are almost always white-coded. And while I don't like focusing on Kristi Noem's appearance, it is very much right-coded.

Most women can't achieve a thigh gap without getting very, very thin - it's a pretty dangerous beauty ideal. Bragging about it publicly - even at the time - was buying into extreme beauty standards in a pretty remarkable way. Anyway, I unfollowed and ignored her for years.

She was bragging about her "thigh gap" - meaning, she was thin enough to have a visible gap between her thighs, and she was boasting about it on Twitter. At that time, a thigh gap was a kind of thinness status symbol, and I wanted no part of that thinness culture.
