I can't get over this number: in 2007, there were 360,000 newspaper jobs. Now, there are 80,000. "My local paper sucked!" Sure. What sucks even more? The void. "I get all my news from the Guardian!" No, the Guardian doesn't report on your town council, your school board, local cops.

Truly, one of the most successful 20th c. innovations of conservatism was merging elitist contempt for the democratization of higher education that happened after World War II with populist contempt for elitism. Still donāt quite know how they did it, but itās been the playbook since at least 1951.

DOGEās death blow to educationĀ studies
A virtual wrecking ball took aim last Monday at the relatively small, wonky corner of the Department of Education that I write about every week: evaluation studies and data collection. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) posted on X that it had terminated 89 of these contracts worth $881 million. These particular cuts stunned people involved in education research because they didnāt go after āwokeā studies about equity, diversity or āculturally relevant pedagogyā ā all more obvious targets of the new administration. Instead, researchers described the canceled projects at the departmentās Institute of Education Sciences as rigorous evaluations of how the federal government spends education dollars, efforts to improve the reading and math skills of U.S.
