The vaquita "little cow" porpoise is the smallest cetacean, a charming little animal, and one we may soon lose. Due to their size and small habitat, they're prone to getting entangled and killed in fishing nets. Today as few as 10 vaquita porpoises remain; they deserve our protection. 🐬

This weekend I had the fun but weird experience of going to the "Helsinki Classic Car Festival", which was basically a bunch of Finns cosplaying a pastiche of mid-century America. Star of the show was this guy singing Elvis covers in the thickest rally driver English I have ever heard.

Today was a very solarpunk kind of a day. Cars and buses and electric food delivery motorcycles buzzed by silently. Electricity prices were negative. The sun was shining and the weather was fine.

The world’s largest sand battery got through Finland’s harshest winter in years. 2,000 tonnes of sand, heated to 500-600°C by cheap power, feeding district heating in Pornainen. And it worked. Result from one install: oil down 100%, emissions down 70%. Industrial process heat is the real prize.

Three miles due west of the volcano, Robert Landsburg continues to fire as the blast bears down. In his final moments, he rewinds the film, seals his camera in his backpack, and braces for impact. Weeks later, his photos are developed—blurred, scorched, and unforgettable.

On the flight to Catalonia I read Steven Weinberg’s account of the very early universe, “The First Three Minutes” On the flight back I read a translation of Milton’s epic “Paradise Lost” There’s some tension between those books I must say.

Sekoilu seis!
