This process has tripled the workload for NIH staff, who now have to renegotiate application language and scope to align with political priorities. And it could expand. On May 29, the White House proposed rules that would give political appointees similar control at other federal agencies.

Top NIH officials have repeatedly said there's no "banned words" at the agency. But the NIH created an algorithm that checks every application for 235 "disfavoured" terms (eg 'gender', 'fossil fuel'). If it finds one, the grant is classified internally as “not clean.” We've published the list.

NIH grants have been under political scrutiny since early 2025. But what does the screening process actually look like? What is being flagged? I spent a month digging into leaked docs and emails. We've published the 235-word list that are being flagged by an internal AI tool. And so much more. 🧵

Seems an extraordinary gap in protection for Members of Congress. If staff claims sexual harassment, there's a fund to pay cash settlements to them. Yet, when a Member of Congress, engaged in the People's work, is charged federally by an antagonistic executive, there's no provision to pay lawyers?

I saw it firsthand at NIH in February '25. This isn't exceptional. This is the SOP now. They're going to force the issue when they look SCOTUS in the eye and say "No" & everyone realizes the means to stop them are corrupted, and even if they worked, they don't *really* have the means to stop them.
