A week or so ago, I was looking for a couple books by an author from 10 and 15 years ago and my library didn't have them. I requested them via a library form. Today I got a notification in Libby that they purchased both titles. Asking your library for writers' books is an amazing way to support us.

One of the best things you can do as an adult is realize that you didn’t actually have to stop drawing, coloring, painting, playing with clay, doing whatever else you loved as a kid. Even if you’re bad at it. Maybe especially if you’re bad at it

it's hard to name one thing I resent most about how AI has broken our society, but the fact that trust in reality is so shattered that we're just spending all day whispering "are you human?" at everything we stumble across with no real idea how to tell either way? fuckin' exhausting

Please do not try to clock “balanced list of threes” as an AI tell because that’s been classic rhetorical structure for going on three millennia and it’s baked into all our writing now, I‘m begging people to read more old things

Bought my house in 2010 and I pay $1000 more a month in homeowners insurance than when I bought it. A MONTH. There were points in my life when that was a make-or-break amount of money. People are being priced out of home ownership here (New Orleans, where we've had MULTIPLE insurance companies fold)

For decades it’s been well understood that learning by doing is essential. If you are not doing the thing—writing the essay, solving the math problem, reading the book—you aren’t learning. Public education should not be all about learning to use a company’s products.

It's been so interesting to watch this unfold. Barnes & Noble and other big book chains shut indies down in the the 1990s (and on) and then Amazon came along and ate up all the book market share. Now people tired of big corporations are creating demand for more indies

Rules for creative work always end up being rules for life as well, & they all come down to the same six principles, IMO: 1. Pay attention. 2. Tell the truth. 3. Honor your work. 4. Love your people. 5. Have fun. 6. Stay open.
