I think that there should be a mandatory civics education course and exam that elected officials are required to pass before they can take office, at the city, state and federal levels. They should have to retake it at the beginning of every term.

While we spectate on The East Wing being torn down, it isn’t just another hallway, it’s where Eleanor Roosevelt built the modern Office of the First Lady, where WWII bunkers were hidden, and where the public enters the People’s House. Erasing it is rewriting history.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

If there’s an author you appreciate, one of the simplest, most helpful, least expensive things you can do for them is ask your public library to add that author’s newest book to their collection. Many library websites have a form for that. So give it a try, and make an author’s day!

As you cancel streaming services, here is a casual reminder that only 16% of Americans read for pleasure anymore, and your local library has hundreds or thousands of books you haven't read. They would love to see you stop by and renew your library card.

One of the first things the Nazis did when they came to power was seize control of Germany's museums in an attempt to rewrite history and culture. Art matters. History matters. Science matters. Fascist regimes are threatened by all three.

Deskilling is real. This is the world generative AI peddlers long for, one where people are incompetent without their service. Don't outsource your brain to this shit. You'll regret it.

I'm an author, librarian and a K-12 educator as well. Yes, we are "alienating" K-12 teachers who use AI tools because there is no ethical use of generative AI anywhere, let alone in the classroom.
