FWIW I like Will a lot but my criticism here is he's just banging his head on a wall. Yes the traditional numbers no longer predict economic sentiment. But it is what it is! We need to accept it and move past the assumption that people respond positively to low unemployment and good GDP figures.

Economic stats: "Everything is awesome! Absolutely fantastic!" Major retailers: "Yeah, we're revising our guidance downward. Again. Our customers can't afford gas."

Point to a SINGLE TIME I've tried to scold people into feeling better about the economy! This is entirely something you're imputing on me because my overarching point makes you uncomfortable and you want me to stop making it.

Will the issue is what you are proposing is a political dead end. You are not going to convince people they should be happy by showing them charts. Americans' deep unhappiness with the economy is going to require real study to understand. But it's not just going away through scolding.
