In the weeks before a book goes on sale, I find myself racked with fear both that folks will read it and that no one will read it. It's a strange, seesawing feeling.

Thirty years ago today, the last “Calvin and Hobbes” strip was published.

It was a bad year for the country but a good one for me. I turned in my book manuscript to the publisher in January, revised it through May, and got better blurbs than I could've hoped for. My daughter started walking and talking. I stayed afloat in writing and publishing. I'll take it.

It's amazing how you think you've seen every Xmas movie made before, say, 1970, and then another crosses your radar and it's actually really wonderful. That happened with me last night, when we watched "The Holly and the Ivy," which is now streaming on Roku. I really enjoyed it. A melancholy treat.
