📉 Our new paper shows Bewick’s Swan numbers in NW/NE Europe have fallen to ~12,900 birds - a 56.7% decline since 1995, with further losses predicted by 2026 unless survival or breeding success improves. Flyway-wide conservation is urgent. 🦢 Download paper >

Black-crowned Night Heron. Perhaps one of the surprises of the year on my local patch of North Cave Wetlands was this adult, presumably last year's returning bird. The bird gave good views at times over its 9 day stay.

On this day 40 years ago: Black and White Warbler at How Hill, an inland Norfolk nature reserve, of all places! 1985 truly was the Autumn that just kept giving. I seem to remember Ticker stepping into a puddle, without realising it was 4’ deep. 💦 The rest of the day had its merits too. See ALT

So last Rattray one for now. On 20th October this year I found a nightingale at Rattray. Around an 8th for Aberdeenshire and first since 2007. Then as my photos hit the various channels it was identified as an Eastern Nightingale. 2nd for Scotland and 4th for Britain.

Curlew Sandpiper at Hayle Estuary This bird was photo’d today (3rd Dec) from the road bridge. Luckily it was the closest wader and gave great views in perfect low winter sunshine. Curlew Sand is a rare winter visitor to Cornwall. As far as I know, this is currently the only one atm.

This time, the washes were ready! 🦢✅ After a 570km U-turn north to Aberdeenshire, likely due to low water at the Ouse Washes, the same swan has migrated south again & arrived to restored, higher levels. A real-world example of landscape-scale habitat assessment by migratory birds.
