...and there were micros too... A dazzling Phyllonorycter leucographella (Firethorn Leaf Miner) & a NFG Argyresthia spinosella (Blackthorn Tip Moth) were mini show-stoppers on a fairly busy morning that gave us a total of 276/80.

It's been a Clearwing kind of afternoon as temperatures began to get properly gnarly... Red-tipped Clearwing got us off & running for the year ~ a wondrous moth that's never seems like a moth at all (that's how they always seem anyway...🙂).

For me, Temminck's Stint is the quintessential Cley wader. This afternoon we enjoyed superb views of two stunning stints feeding contentedly on the oozy mud of Watling Water ~ the best views of had of the species in all my years here.

One of the funkiest moths of recent nights was this very fine Nematopogon swammerdamella - the Large Longhorn - a scientific name almost as long as his horns. A typical mid-May micro that feeds on assorted herbaceous plants.

Feeding signs of Epinotia abbreviana on Wych elm from

today. The larva feeds on a leaf before it unfurls from the bud, leaving a distinctive, rather fab pattern of holes, though it's not always that neat. The larva then feeds nearby between spun leaves

10 days ago I found some Pieris eggs on evergreen candytuft, Iberis sempervirens, in the
#UGent
botanical garden. They emerged last weekend and the black head capsule in young larvae is diagnostic for southern small white, Pieris mannii.
