New for the year today was the ace Rhubarb & Custard (Rosy Knot-horn//Oncocera semirubella). Knot-horns are a terrific group & they are wonderfully varied in appearance. Top of them all, Rhubarb & Custard which is a proper crows-pleaser.

Common Blue in the churchyard earlier today. Performed perfectly in amongst the grasses and knapweed of a lovely, truly "wild" part of the village.

Saturday giveaway time! I picked a copy of the (still brilliant) Macmillan Guide to Bird Identification at Cley village fete & like the last time, I want to give this copy to a really keen young birder (18 or under). Drop me a DM - or reply here - & Lynnette will pick a name from a hat.

This giant was the absolute star of this morning's traps ~ scurrying around inside the MV, looking huge! The ♂️ Four-spotted Footman was new for the garden & is quite unlike any other macro we've had. Not a common moth locally either.

Moth Species per Hectad in Norfolk map. Fun fact: Norfolk officially covers (or partially covers) 74 Hectads, however moths have only ever been recorded in 70 Hectads. There are 4 unrecorded tiny bits of land on the border! (VC27 and VC28 only, aggregates not included)

Butterfly survey time near Wells today followed by a visit to Warham Camp where a few Chalkhill Blues were found roosting in the grass on a cool, breezy day. We found 7 or 8 but a couple were fantastically obliging.

A trio of Underwings from the LED ~ a chunky looking, dark as pitch Langmaid's Yellow Underwing (incredibly, our 4th in almost as many days!) + a vibrant cinnamon-toned Least Yellow Underwing & multi-striped camo Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing.

Some garden gold just now on the lavender ~ a White-letter Hairstreak dropped in to feed for a time before circling up & away over the elder. Amazingly, this is our second in the garden (July 17 2021) ~ they must be closer to home than we think...

We let the LED go solo in the garden for a little experiment last night & we got terrific results with a tally of 126/62. This super Herald was NFY & it may be the only one we get this year (they remain very scarce in our part of TG04).

16,290 days is the gap between my 1st UK Hudsonian Godwit (at Countess Wear) & my 2nd today on the Stour, along the Essex/Suffolk border. I was about to turn 14 when I saw the Exe bird, my first real rarity too & I was absolutely buzzing afterwards.

We've never had Lesser Broad-bordered Underwings with hindwing patterns like these two Langmaid's. Totally in keeping with examples we had at Sandwich last week. Also here, a more standard Lesser Broad-bordered Underwing, very different look.

Sallow Kitten is such a lovely moth & this one from the MV was our 2nd of the trip here at Sandwich Bay. The three Kitten species are surely some of the smartest moths there are that can be seen at this time of year. Gorgeous thing!

A funky bug day around the Bay: first is Mogulones geographicus, a weevil found on Viper's Bugloss that has a restricted UK range ~ love the distinctive etched-patterning of this one. Also, a Tortoise Shieldbug species (either Eurygaster maura or E. testudinaria).

With hundreds of moths to choose from (out of some 115 species), it was tough to pick a favourite from the morning's haul, but I think that it's hard to beat Pyrausta purpuralis (Common Purple & Gold). Such a cool colour scheme.

Here at Sandwich Bay, this has to be one of the funkiest little things we've seen in ages. An Elm Zig-zag Sawfly larvae showing off it's amazing leaf-cutting prowess. Not necessarily a good thing for the trees: it's an invasive species & can be damaging to weakened elms.

An absolute highlight from Ham Fen was this Wasp Spider & its entombed damselflies in the ultra-distinctive criss-cross web. We've seen numerous Wasp Spiders in the past but never with additional damselfly prey items. Remarkable to see up close.

Pretty sure that this wins "bug of the day" award here ~ three of these amazing looking weevils in the garden - we think this is Curculio venosus (a type of acorn weevil) or a close relative. Giving it maximum Gonzo at the front end. Superb!
