Two lichens that live below the high water mark on rocky shores. Wahlenbergiella mucosa and W. striatula. Also the marine lichen that lives on barnacles, Collemopsidium foveolatum - the tiny openings on the rough surface of the barnacle are formed by the lichen.

We have a similar problem in NI: not only are new SSSIs not designated, the agency responsible does not have the resources or staff to effectively monitor existing ones and enforce management conditions. Our most important sites are allowed to disappear, particularly vulnerable grasslands.

Stop #lichenGBI press! Hugely excited to find endangered #lichen Anaptychia ciliaris, presumed extinct in Suffolk. Last county record 1985. In freefall in Britain for decades due to air pollution and tree loss. Only current known location in East Anglia, and indeed wider region. On oak near Holton.

A splendid Least Black Arches on an oak trunk in woods at Dersingham today. The caterpillar feeds on various broad-leaved trees.

Rue-leaved Saxifrage on the churchyard wall at Wells-next-the-sea. There were also hundreds of Bristly Millipedes on this wall.

Great Silver Water Beetles are an almost regular occurrence in the moth trap in spring here. Assume they are increasing in range nationally.

After-work jaunt up to the coast. Lots of insects flying on the breeze, some of them landed on me as I sat on the shingle: ten-spot ladybird, and a staph which is probably Bledius spectabilis. It has a very cool forward-pointing horn on the pronotum.

Mullein and Great Prominent in the light trap this morning, despite a touch of frost on the grass.

Male Early Mining Bees (Andrena haemorrhoa) quartering the grass. Hairy-footed Flower Bees (Anthophora plumipes) with their high-pitched buzz. Small green metallic Lasioglossum (Lasioglossum morio) excavating in the earth & Yellow-legged Mining Bees (Andrena flavipes) @norfolknats.bsky.social

Dark-edged Beefly and Yellow-legged Mining Bee taking advantage of bright warmish sunshine and exposed banks of soil in the garden. The YLMBs are burrowing, I suspect other Andrenas will too as the spring progresses.

A good search around the dark interior of Foxley Wood today produced a third Norfolk location for Coniocarpon cinnabarinum, and abundant small lobes of Normandina pulchella. And a willow warbler - which is nice.

Good session at Grimston Warren, with the jelly lichen Enchylium tenax abundant on a hillock, Heather Twist Argyrotaenia ljungiana and dung beetle Chilothorax distinctus mooching around.

Shoulder pads are in. Frosted Green to the light trap. Love a green moth. 💚

Lichen klaxon alert!!! An eagle-eyed friend found something she thought "looked rather like something I'd seen in the book". Teloschistes chrysophthalmos (AKA Goldeneyes) has made it to Cumbria. Just a bit further north than previously found... so keep checking those hawthorns everyone! #LichenGBI

A predictor of lichen diversity in a churchyard is the presence of key features; Boundary wall Variety of tombs Exposed headstones Lignum; gates, benches Old church walls Old trees Low cover of shade Low cover of ivy Necton had several of these and thus had a high count of lichen species - 76.

This is the suggestion for that 'deep peat' mandible I RT'ed earlier. In awe of the knowledge and recognition of some (many!) people.

An insect body part, recovered from an 80cm deep peat core in a mid-Norfolk fen. It seems quite a distinctive shape, so somebody may even know what species it is from. Let me know if you do! 1.3mm.

Pseudevernia furfuracea is not at all common in Norfolk, except, it seems, in Necton churchyard where the headstones close to the road have lots. This is var. ceratea with a C+ red reaction on the medulla (the white fluffy layer under the outer cortex).

Coniocarpon cinnabarinum growing in Gosbeck Wood, Suffolk. This species is commonly recorded growing on smooth barked trees. The lichen is widespread in the west of the UK but rare in the east. This record is a county first for Suffolk (either Vice County)! #lichens #Suffolk

I led a lichen walk at Earlham cemetery today. Lots of lichens seen but the most bizarre and interesting thing was seeing morels grow out of the green stone chippings of a gravelled grave.

Tree growth on heathland allows the trees to spread horizontally as well as vertically. The low branches of these oaks are good for pioneer lichens, each of these trees supported around 18-20 species. Salthouse Heath.

This female minotaur beetle was a surprise in the moth trap this morning. More expected but just as good lookin’ was an Oak Beauty.

On Friday I went and collected some leaves from a Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo) growing in Norwich, and today I got round to checking them. As I'd hoped there were several immature Strawberry Tree aphids (Wahlgreniella nervata ssp. arbuti) on them, a new species for my Norwich aphid list.

A few pics from today at Heydon Park with Norfolk bryo group: Pertusaria pertusa, Lecidea fuscoatra/ grisella, Hypocenomyce scalaris parasitised by the fungus Clypeococcum hypocenomycis, and a cut stump oozing some terrific orange gunk. I will look at bryos next time I promise.
