I did a lot of research a decade ago on NY Slavery & want to mention that while the 1827 manumission deadline is true, the children of enslaved people were indentured to their masters & thus, theoretically, someone could have been in indentured because of their parents enslavement as late as 1848

mentions below, these laws were gradual with the enslaver in mind, to blunt the economic impact of freedom. New York had the most slavery in the North, and it didnât fully end until 1827! However most enslaved people had self-emancipated and moved to the city by then.

For those going âNew Jersey?!â Yes. Slavery happened in the north too. Most passed gradual emancipation laws post-Revolution. NJâs was so gradual there were still enslaved people in 1865. Lincolnâs proclamation only applied to the South. The last people to be freed were in NJ, Delaware + Kentucky.

Today Iâm remembering the very last people in America to be freed from chattel slavery, who were not the Texans who learned of the Emancipation Proclamation on this day in 1865, but thousands of people in Delaware, Kentucky and New Jersey, who were freed by the 13th six months later.
