I took a bit of a break from reading weekly due to some big personal changes but I did finish this book on Thursday! I quite liked it, obviously dour at times due to the fraught history and present of queerness, but also very uplifting.

It's trans day of visibility y'all! For the majority of my life until the past few years, I was so depressed. I was living a lie and couldn't figure out what it was. Now I feel like I'm living a dream. Sure there are lots of unfair challenges, but the only thing I regret is not starting sooner.

My story is very sappy. I was in the car listening to music with my partner and the song "we fell in love in october" by girl in red came on. The chorus of that song goes "my girl, my girl, my girl, you will be my girl..." and my partner was singing it.

I'm a little behind on reading, trying not to internalize this made up deadline 😅 Next up is a recommendation from my partner, a book about bisexuality! I actually bought this ages ago from a now closed bookstore/game shop when I was first coming out to myself as bi. What a journey I've had since!

I totally forgot to talk about this one, it was so good!! I found some of the multiverse time travel stuff hard to follow but the romance was top notch and it has the hottest haircut scene I've ever read. It helps that I am also into curvy nerds 😜

In my stomach flu addled mind I forgot to post what book I was reading this week, it's Cosmic Love at the Multiverse Hair Salon by Annie Marie! I've been missing romance and this one apparently has it in spades along with some sick sci-fi elements. Oh and it's gay!! Love to read about lesbians.

Just finished this evening. This was a strange but good read! I truly did not expect a single twist in this book, nor did I expect what flavor of thriller this was at all. I honestly should've expected the unexpected from this considering Night Vale.

This week's book is Alice Isn't Dead by Joseph Fink. This one was a gift from @sylfaun.bsky.social !! I'm very excited to read this one, it's a bit of a venture into the thriller genre, and I adore Welcome to Night Vale which Fink co-created and co-writes.

This was a challenging read, but I think an important one. I was lacking the global perspective on the fight for queer rights, and I don't think I had ever fully internalized the logic or lack thereof we're up against.

Next up is Who's Afraid of Gender by Judith Butler. I believe I added this to my readlist after watching a Philosophy Tube video (ty Abigail Thorn!). I picked this up at the Boulder Book Store, they had an entire queer section including a dedicated trans section! Hell yeah!

Finished this one last night, had me full sobbing. To be honest while I was reading I was really expecting this to be a bit goofy and YA but it was very funny, heartfelt, and at times heartwrenching. It's far from a usual romance but it earns the climax so well.

Back from vacation! I had such a blast seeing friends but I am so glad to be back with my cats. I managed to snag quite a few books while I was away.

Finished this last night, not as bad as I was expecting based on the cover but still not amazing. The emotional highs felt unearned and the protagonist felt underdeveloped. Both of these are probably because of the short length of the book.

Week 5 of a book every week is one my partner wanted us to read together. They are much more into monster romance than I am, but next week is our vacation so I was wanting to share a book that might be an easy read.

Just finished this one today...wow this one is not for the faint of heart. Some of the most horrific descriptions and language I've ever read. It's clearly meant to be a parallel and criticism of factory farming, the scale of cruelty brought into stark focus by exploring it happening to humans.

This. Exactly this. I felt this so thoroughly in my bones I wrote a poem about it last year.

Here's the next book! Tender Is The Flesh by Augustina Bazterrica. I found this one at my local bookshop and its premise caught my attention. It's set in a world where all animal meat has been rendered poisonous by an infection and the world has turned to human flesh instead.

Just finished this up, what an enjoyably horrific read. I particularly enjoyed Tonsilstonespunksplatter666!, Gender Envy, and The Divine Carcass, but there were so many other standouts too. The vivid descriptions of bodies and viscera meeting gender and autonomy speaks to me at such a deep level.

Week 3 of reading a book every week of 2026 is a go! This week I'm jumping into queer horror again with Your Body is not Your Body, a horror anthology featuring trans and gender non-conforming authors. "Featuring murderous pleasure-bots; proselytizing zombies; acid-filled alien cops" and much more!

Finished Frankenstein yesterday. It was one of the more enjoyable gothic classics I've read, particularly the portion of the story told from the monster's perspective.

Week 2 of reading a book every week of 2026 is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, specifically this 2023 edition which has illustrations from John Coulthart which already look enticing. I recently read Carmilla and Dracula as part of a tour of gothic horror and Frankenstein is up next!

What a great read to start the year with. Hungerstone explores the feelings of resentment, hunger, and reservation that often come with living as a woman; holding yourself back so that you might survive in a man's world, and the deep appetite that creates.

Week #1 of a book every week for 2026 is going to be Hungerstone by Kat Dunn. This is sold as "A compulsive feminist reworking of Carmilla, the queer novella that inspired Dracula." I just read Carmilla and Dracula last year so I'm looking forward to it!

I'm going to try and read a book every week of 2026! I know that's less than some folks read (including my partner who's probably in the hundreds for this year) but it'll be big for me. I'll try and post about em, maybe even give some quick reviews. Better than doomscrolling at least!
