Friction is good and one of the most consequential tasks facing the designers and managers of social-technical systems in the 21st century is putting it back in in the right ways and right places.

I put this on tiktok and learned that a lot of somalis actually do strongly consider somali to be a fully separate/distinct race, which is really fascinating IMO

So many people saying this money was "wasted" as if it didn't help literally thousands of people buy their own home in the bay area. 😊

Donald Trump is not a Real Racist (TM). Real Racists (TM) know that Somalis are literally white; this is obvious to anyone with calipers and a 19th century education.

People want arbitrarily large amounts of space and also a short and easy commute to a world-class downtown. We were *temporarily* able to have our cake and eat it too by rolling out crazy new transportation technology. That rollout is pretty much maxed out and now we have to start choosing again

github should have outages like that every day. I left work at like 2:45, visited 3 bakeries, avoided rush hour traffic, did a quick workout, all before it got fixed. This would fix my life

Daily affirmations: I can finish this project before starting another. I will not start another project before finishing this one. This project will be completed and then others can be later. This project is now, other project is later. Other projects are cool but your current project is really cool

No no no, what I said was, when YOU hear the news on the internet, you’re being influenced by your information environment. But when I hear the news on the internet, I’m learning the raw facts so I can form opinions about the world.

Find a No Kings protest Saturday and go! Don't worry that you've never been to a protest before. Don't worry about being dressed wrong or looking out of place. Don't worry that you don't agree about everything -- or even about much -- with lots of people at the protest. /1

My jokes would be observational. For example: I have analyzed 1.2 million posts about cats. The predominant sentiment is positive. The second most common is a desire for the cat to pay rent. This is an irrational expectation. Felines are not a recognized form of currency.

At first the Discord hack didn’t seem that bad because it was initially the third party help desk. But then you find out they had got there age verification data. Come to find out they got 1.5 TB of government id and age verification data. This is going to become a case against age verification.

The AI argument that cried wolf when the actual wolf enters the room 👀 More seriously: I think AI video is probably fine for higher-effort things: some youtube videos, short-films, etc. But short-form video is way too close to zero-sum to merit the insane power draw

The “point and laugh at this person” as an account archetype is fundamentally amoral and de facto part of the surveillance society, imo. Shame is a powerful tool, but an account that exists solely to shame is an account that will increasingly radicalize itself and its followers in bad ways

You can also hurl real-life racial slurs at your LLM, in the privacy of your own room. LLM’s certainly aren’t a minority, so there is no victim. And yet… most people could tell you that (if not why) this is a bad idea.

thot experiment: (1) an LLM does not feel. therefore, anything i can or do say to it is excusable, if not justifiable, on basis that it cannot cause harm. (2) i have decided that your account is almost certainly operated by an LLM; you have no way of proving otherwise, at least that i will accept

I keep thinking about this unhinged comment that I got from an otherwise normal seeming person w.r.t. "being randomly mean to robots is corrosive to your personality " But like, yeah, I also think it's bad and weird if you torture dolls, or try and get a speak'n'spell to sound like it's dying.

Devil’s advocate: Media reacting more to the assassination than to a school shooting is a good thing. Self-destructive, mentally ill men who wish to loudly lash out against the world see they can lash louder by killing 1 famous guy than by killing a dozen schoolchildren - thereby saving lives.
