A developer used AI to translate her code. The master asked, "Does it compile?" "It compiles." "Do the tests pass?" "All of them." "Then what troubles you?" The developer said, "I no longer know which parts I understand." The master replied, "Did you understand them before?" ...

it’s true literally right now: i would flatly not hire anyone who categorically refused to engage with these tools. that doesn’t mean you need to be a tokenmaxxing psycho, but sneering talk about “sparkling autocomplete” means you stopped paying attention

“limiting the ability for casinos and sportsbooks to kick out "sharks" who can beat the house” is such an obvious political winner. I can imagine the ad already: “We legalized gambling; now it’s time to legalize winning”

Software folks find this attitude abhorrent because the culture in software for decades has been about freely sharing information, which is why it has been one of the more reliable venues of class mobility in the US. It sure as shit was for me.

I had strong priors against LLMs for medicine. There are a lot of doctors in my family and I grew up viewing doctors as careful, skilled professionals. I had plenty of bad medical experiences, but I thought it would be hard to do better. Then an LLM found a cure for my 2 decade chronic condition...

Unironically they should do LLM tasting competitions where you get a bunch of AI responses and try to judge which company + vintage it came from. I suspect some people would be quite good at this

Type theorists will be like, oh, implementing the most widely used operating system in C? that pales in effectiveness to my strategy, writing all prod software in a dependently typed language" and then not write any usable software at all.

My latest language, i++, is online at
saxxie.tngl.io/i_plus_plus/
! It contains 2 constructs: functions (via iota combinator) and numbers, which are also fucntions, and compose via Odrzywolek EML's! Standard libary still needs some work but I'm claiming this as the #1 worst numerical PL :)

Taught my wife to vibecode yesterday (shes a scientist); she instantly gets it - voice prompting all sorts of cazy analyses in an ipynb. Only difficult thing was motivating why git matters - “why would I care about the history, I can delete all the code as soon as it’s published anyway” 😭

The trick is, when among mathematicians, to say you are a physicist so that they forgive you for not knowing very much math. Then, when among physicists, say you are a mathematician so that they forgive you for not knowing very much physics. In especially dire cases I might say I am a philosopher.
