The Onme Bonum image is zombie knowledge. Coined by a knowledge institution, debunked, but still in circulation. Like myths about spiral staircases in castles, some things persist because they are interesting.

He & medical historian Lori Jones then wrote to dozens of Internet site hosts that had the image posted, apprised them of the error, & suggested they might want to take it down. Many did. And they pub'd this account, re both this image & other medical misdiagnoses: www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

The #OmneBonum leprosy image strikes again. Over the course of three years, me, @richardnevell.bsky.social, @medievalbadger.bsky.social & other colleagues waged a campaign to correct a visual "misdiagnosis": an image meant to depict sufferers from leprosy was being misinterpreted as plague.

We've just published a new @york.ac.uk Open Research in Practice case study 📝 @lucymoore.bsky.social challenged herself to improve the representation of the lives and achievements of women on @wikipedia.org by contributing an article for a woman from every country in the world 🌍
