History is mostly written by the victors, but in 'Laments to the Fallen Over Centuries' I've taken a look at evidence from contemporary culture, the landscape and from ancient Cymric literature to search for alternative narratives that speak of the futility of war, love and loss over centuries

Literally, whilst we don’t routinely travel by water, almost without exception the major rail and air transport hubs we travel to are where they are because of centuries of coastal and riverine routes around our world. We are way more connected to our past on a routine basis than we realise.

Which raises the question, whilst we *rightly* protect ancient monuments and provide listed status to centuries old buildings why don’t we afford our rivers that have formed how we have inhabited our world over millennia the same protection?

Thames Water set to be free of fines to 2030 whilst local attempts to stop the spread of poultry mega-farms are to be weakened. Does this mean all our efforts to protect our ancient rivers in the Anglo-Cymric borderland are set to be undone?

The original post from @hookland.bsky.social really set me thinking about this earlier war memorial at Kinver. More powerfully than most places you feel that you are walking into *their* space. That monument and those names matter. Archaeology reminds us we’ve been doing this over millennia.

Strangely, I was up on Kinver Edge earlier today. We always stop at the war memorial before heading back down to the road. Kinver is unusual in having two memorials. This is the earliest where the survivors would meet to honour their fallen comrades. The second was
