Certainly, the evidence from borders over millennia speaks of these landscapes as spaces where the impact of elites are keenly felt. The balance comes from evidence on the ground where local populations often respond with pragmatism and creativity to the challenges and opportunities they present

Old school top down large-scale historical studies fell from grace for good reasons. But new ways of looking at the evidence at the macro level over time and space can reveal valuable, if depressing, patterns we need to take account of if we are to reverse our current decline.
