As a massive politics nerd who has an engineering degree from a post-92 university this is something I always find so bizarre, e.g. MPs talking about how young people need to prepare to be offended at uni. How offended could I be by Digital Signal Processing or Fundamentals of Quality Assurance?

I suspect a lot of the outrage at the footage comes from the fact that most people, including the political and media class, have no idea how roughly police treat suspects, including the innocent and those not resisting arrest

Which brings me to the handcuffing. I can see nothing in the video that shows a need for the victim to be handcuffed. There is clearly no reasonable chance of violence and he is in no condition to attempt an escape

The officer made those comments in response to the victim saying he'd been stabbed. Maybe the officer should have immediately checked. But the time between the victim saying he's been stabbed and the officer trying to revive him can be measured in seconds

This isn't an unreasonable preconception, because criminals (or their family members) don't usually call the police and ask them to attend the scene of the crime they just committed, unless it's to turn themselves in

First, the killer's brother called the police and alleged the victim had committed a crime. He didn't say the victim was injured and denied weapons were involved. This means the police arrive with a preconception of who the victim is and they're not expecting injuries inflicted by a deadly weapon

If the police had come across them by chance or were responding to a neighbour reporting a disturbance, then maybe. But in this scenario, the police would also have to assume that a person has committed a violent crime and then summoned the police to the scene of said crime because...reasons?

The argument here is simple. There is no reliable statistical evidence on crimes committed using a Sikh religious knife. You can't target communities based on the acts of one individual. This is not comparable to Stephen Lawrence because the killer was convicted immediately and not 18 years later.

This is probably the most accurate summary of the real and persistent failure in British policing, that becoming the suspect has a significant impact on how you are treated, and any solution runs through that. As Stephen says elsewhere this is the source of most deaths in police custody.
