Simply put, Canada shares a long border with a country led by someone with no respect for international law. The world just got a lot less predictable, and the range of outcomes has widened further.

There’s a few ways this is different from other similar acts in US history. 1) not even a pretense of a plausible national interest 2) transparently an attempt to shift attention from domestic failures 3) other presidents to do similar were self-conscious globalists, Trump is the opposite

At some point in the future, it will be interesting to see if America engages in some sort of reconciliation process -- the removal of the symbols Trump has put up, accountability for certain administration officials, mass attempts to reduce partisan polarization, etc.
