I really need to put more time into this positively wild game.

I've been left out of credits of a game (Civ3) I was the lead designer for the first ~6 months, yet core ideas that Doug Kaufman and I had prototyped (eg resource site rules) were prominently featured in the final game. I'm well known so I survived, but stolen crediting is a real industry problem.

My controversial take is that if you didn't get credited on a game you have proof you've worked on, just list it on your CV. I do with one. Never had any issues. Not being credited still sucks but you don't need to be polite when they're not.

To be fair, Neal wrote "The Baroque Cycle" longhand after a computer backup disaster ate the first five hundred pages or so. Then he transcribed it himself in EMACS and formatted it for submission using a homebrew set of Elisp macros he wrote— Yeah nope, that's just deranged.

One of the big things I had to learn is that negative actions reinforce negative thoughts, and positive actions reinforce positive thoughts. If you want social media to not be a soul tax, you have to structure how you engage with it so that it's positive. That's not gonna happen on its own!

So in Arc Raiders there is a door glitch. You don't need to know what it is, just that the gamers are brainstorming all the "easy" ways to "fix" the doors and it's simultaneously hilarious and horrifying. My two favorite solutions are "add a kill volume" and "put a second door behind the door".

friday soapbox: as a designer, if you want something to be a skillful action for players, and you want growth in this skill to be very deep/meaningful, then you need to also let players be bad at it. sometimes horrendously bad. players hate this pain, and designers often want to mitigate it away.
