Or, just spitballing here, the government could address the genuine issues, such as housing issues, cost of living crisis, and confront disinformation spread about immigration to help better inform people, rather than pandering to xenophobia and exacerbating hostile rhetoric and scapegoating.

It’s time the government changed the narrative. It must stop using criminalising, scapegoating and dehumanising language, defend the rights of people to seek safety and work to unite our communities.

In a speech to launch his tough new immigration plans, the prime minister parroted the right’s rhetoric.

If he didn't know about it then it's a worrying lack of knowledge on the historical immigration discourse by the PM and his speech writers. If he DID know, then it shows he has no problem with the framing. Either option reflects very badly on Starmer

My first job was as lecturer in sociolinguistics, a field that would barely exist were it not for William Labov, who has just died. All linguistics is social or it is nothing. RIP
