i like the verbal gymnastics here and the implication that low paid migrant workers are not contributing enough (because for migrants the only contribution that counts is money and not labour) but that low income Brits are contributing enough because they’re hardworking

This just isn't true. The 1951 convention requires state parties to facilitate the integration and naturalisation of refugees because the people who drafted it weren't moral vacuums or stupid enough to think that persecution that made people flee for their lives would magically go away in a year.

The EU law referred to here already allows removal of benefits in case of "concealed financial resources" and sanctions for "seriously violent behaviour". And it's the government's choice to make asylum-seekers wait 12 months before they can work, increasing dependence.

A lot of people seemingly not reading beyond the headline and missing this crucial bit - if people are restricted to jobs on that list the the right to work is ineffective, and this is also no change from the current position
