OTTAWA – Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne says it’s “sad” that the U.S. “turned its back” on Canada by starting a trade war which is now forcing Ottawa to “reinvent” the national economy.

Trump must not have liked that I and others called his team’s proposal for g7 secondary tariffs on India and China a stalling tactic. He is doubling down on the tool and calling EU bluff. EU/friends prefer other tools especially financial leverage

The fact that trump is back to calling for 100% secondary tariffs on India and China makes the whole policy less credible and more a threat than if it were 20 or 30%, especially hard to believe given Us desire for a deal with China/continued critical mineral access

Usg is doubling down on use of tariffs as leverage in these circs, and is taking the fight to the Europeans who are asking for more pressure on Russia. The challenge is US is asking for less efficient pressure on a wide set of trading partners
