Great line in this article: âMy phone is my toy and my toil, the first object I touch upon waking, the spackle to my spare minutes, the inanimate partner in our shared lie, which is that it works for me and not the other way around.â

As a society we must better explain why "eliminating information silos" is such a dangerous goal at the fed level. Some data sharing is good! But only in a privacy-preserving way, with individual consent. A significant engineering challenge that SV billionaires don't want to see completed.

The way I try to de-AI-ify my classes is that I emphasize at the beginning and throughout the semester that all we're doing is reading some interesting shit other humans have produced, talking about that shit, and writing about it. Humans have been benefitting from that process for centuries w/o AI.

There's a whole generation that learned irony before sincerity and now they're trapped. Can't be earnest without a layer of self-deprecation. Can't be enthusiastic without signaling awareness of how cringe enthusiasm is. The price of never being vulnerable is never connecting.

If there's one absolutely plausible use for large AI models, it'd be finding options for equitable redistricting boundaries. But at least we can generate animated videos out our photos we took with our phones that also record video when we want.

I worked at a non-profit that delivers medically tailored food to people with chronic illness and there were two chefs working there on loan from Matt and Trey (and paid by them) because they wanted to keep paying their staff while they worked all that permit stuff out. Pretty generous.

Masked, anonymous men rove the country, beating and detaining anybody they care to, to meet their daily quota. Some of those people are sent to foreign concentration camps, without legal review. You are not allowed to fight back or resist in any way. These men are accountable to nobody.
